The Black Rabbit

Am I the only one who finds it funny that Sunny has been replaced by a bunny in Indiranagar? Anyway, The Black Rabbit has been open for a while now, (map) and getting good reviews from all who had visited. That seemed a good enough carrot for us to ferry ourselves away from Koramangala’s ever growing dining options. They have valet parking, or you could just park on the lane parallel to 100 feet Road. They don’t take reservations during the weekend. Tables are easy to find around 7, but an hour later, you might have to wait.

They have a pleasant outdoor sitting area, and after a little tour to take a look at the options inside, (a couple of floors) we figured we liked the outside just a little more. Thankfully there weren’t any smokers around either. There’s a fairly comprehensive liquor menu with a few house cocktails thrown in as well. We chose the Currylicious and the Cuba Libre. The first had gin, sweet & sour mix, and just the right amount of curry leaves to give it that extra zing. The latter was a refreshing mix of light rum, cola and lime juice.

The food menu does not really focus on a lot of variety, but has sufficient options nevertheless. There was a more-than-usual presence of carrots in the menu, I wondered if it was by design. We began with the Bacon & Cheese bombs and that must explain why the first couple of photos with the new phone bombed! Thankfully the dish didn’t! Calamari Tempura was next, and the perfectly cooked squid, crispy batter and the chili sauce that accompanied it made it a splendid dish. For the main course, D asked for a Pan Seared Halibut fillet and I ordered a Twice Cooked Pork Belly. The first dish had a Mallu touch and the gravy reminded us a bit of the typical Kerala fish curry, it was served with Beans Poriyal and steamed rice! The pork was superbly cooked, and with the vindaloo sauce, apples and  mashed potato, it offered a range of textures and flavours.

For desserts, the Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with vanilla ice cream and Brandy snap, was recommended to us and the gooey, warm chocolate was just fantastic.

The portion sizes aren’t huge and worked just right for us because we were able to taste quite a few dishes and not feel stuffed. All of the above cost us a little less than Rs.2600. The service was very friendly and helpful, and the only thing we missed was being asked for water! In short, a must visit if you’re in this part of town.
