Ikshvaku

Considered a son of Vaivaswatamanu.

Antecedents: Vishnu – Brahma – Marichi – Kashyapa – Vivasvan – Vaivaswatamanu – Ikshvaku. However, as as per Mahabharata Ashwamedhaparva Chapter 4, Vaivaswatamanu – Mahabahu – Prasandhi – Kshupa – Ikshvaku.

Vaivaswatamanu had a total of 16 sons – Manu, Yama, Yami, Revanta, Ashwinis, Sudyumna, Ikshvaku, Nriga, Sharyati, Dishta, Dhrishta, Karusha, Narishyanda, Nabhaga, Prishadhra, Kavi, the last 10 with his wife Shradha, and the others with Chaya.

The Ikshvaku clan originated from Ikshvaku and all the suryavanshi kings belong to it. Since Ikshvaku was born of Kashyapa’s son Vivasvan (Surya) the dynasty is called Suryavansh. As per Devibhagavata Saptamaskanda, Ikshvaku was born from Manu’s spittle. The clan from Ikshvaku to Rama’s sons Lav -Kush is as below.

Ikshvaku had 3 sons – Danda, Vikukshi, Nimi. Vikukshi – Shashada – Puranjaya – Kukulstha – Anenas – Pridhulashwa – Prasenjit – Yuvanashwa – Maandaata – Ambarish. Maandaata had three sons – Ambarish, Purukutsa and Muchukunda and fifty daughters. The daughters were all married by a sage called Saubhari.

Purukutsa – Trasadasyu – Anaranya – Aryashwa – Vasumanas – Sudhanva – Trairyaruna – Satyavrata – Trishanku – Harishchandra – Rohitashwa – Harita – Chunchu – Sudeva – Bharuka – Bahuka – Sagara. Sagara had sixty thousand sons with Sumati and a lone son called Asamanjas with Keshini.

Asamanjas – Amshuman -Dilipa – Bhageeratha – Shrutanada – Sindhudweepa – Ayutayus – Rituparna – Sarvakama – Sudasana – Mitrasakha – Kanmashapada – Ashmaka – Mulaka – Khadwanga – Dirkhabahu – Raghu – Aja – Dasarath. Dasarath had 4 sons – Rama with Kausalya, Bharata with kaikeyi and Lakshmana and Shatrughna with Sumitra. Lav and Kush were born to Rama and Sita.
