From then on, Draupadi decided to spend one year each with every husband, and stated that if any of the other husbands saw her during that period, they would go for a pilgrimage for one year. Once, a brahmin came to the palace and complained that his cows had been stolen. Arjuna agreed to help him, but his weapons were stored in Yudhishtira’s palace. That was the year that Draupadi was staying with Yudhishtira. Arjuna, in his haste, forgot about this, and entered Yudhishtira’s palace. Thus he had to go on a pilgrimage for a year.

Arjuna left the palace for the forests, accompanied by several brahmins. Arjuna reached the banks of the Ganga and went into the river for a bath. There, he met Ulupi and asked her who she was. She said that she was the daughter of Kauravya, a naga who belonged to the Airavata clan. She said that she had come to the river for a bath, seen him and fell in love with him. Arjuna told her that as per his oath, he couldn’t marry for 12 months. Ulupi debated with him and convinced him that it was right to marry her. Arjuna married her and their son was Iravan.

See Arjuna for how Ulupi had him killed and then brought him back to life.

After that episode, Ulupi came to Hastinapura with Chitrangada, another wife of Arjuna and her son Babruvahana as per Mahabharata Ashwamedhaparva Chapter 87. As soon as she reached there, she greeted Kunti, Draupadi, Subhadra etc and presented them with many gifts. At one point, the Mahabharata indicates that Ulupi spent her time looking after Gandhari (Ashramavasikaparva Chapter 1 verse 23) The Mahabharata Ashramavasikaparva Chapter 10 verse 46 also indicates that Ulupi was liked by the subjects. When the Pandavas started their Himalayan climb for moksha, Ulupi went into the Ganges and Chitrangada returned to her kingdom, as per Mahabharata Mahaprasthanikaparva Chapter 1 verse 27.

Ulupi is also known as Bhujagatmaja, Bhujagondrakanyaka, Bhujagottama, Kauravi, Kauravaduhita, Kauravyakulanandini, Pannaganandini, Pannagasuta, Pannagatmaja, Pannagaeshwarakanya, Pannagi, Uragatmaja.

A wife of Arjuna.
