As per Padmapurana Chapter 16, he was first born as a shudra in Karavirapura. After his death, Yama&#8217;s soldiers took him to Kalapuri where he was given a sentence of six manvantaras. He served that and was then born as a naga and suffered. During an auspicious night, the snake managed to throw out offerings which fell on Vishnu&#8217;s feet.
