Carry on Doctor

Any of you remember the ‘Carry on’ series? Old stuff, but used to get repeated on the movie channels, till the ‘latest movie on your screen’ wars began… Hilarious stuff, made you laugh till your jaw hurt… Only, my jaw started hurting a few days back without me laughing..
now, i usually treat myself pretty well (yes, very funny, i knew that was coming) with the regular stuff available in medical stores, but this one proved a bit too complicated, particularly since i had a lot of (cliche/wisecrack) reasons thrown at me… like
Me: My jaw hurts, at the junction of the ear and the jaw
Friend: Judging by your intelligence, your wisdom tooth is long overdue
or
Me: Am not sure if its a wisdom tooth or an ear infection
Colleague: yup, all that empty space in between, something’s bound to happen..
Another Colleague: Hear hear!!

Yup, i do get plenty of help, and anyways, after trying out simple home remedies like Crocin, Iodex at the joint and an innovative method of rubbing amrutanjan on an earbud and poking it into places where no bud has gone before, i gave up and decided to take some professional help…And the doc was the biggest wisecracker of them all…
Unlike the modern day, cold, “show me the money” kind, this was an older, wiser doc with the most cheerful disposition i have seen from a man still at work at 8 pm on a Friday night…So from asking me whether i had recently encountered any nuts that were tough to crack, and almost making me believe that i should sneeze with my mouth closed, inspite of the risk of my eyes popping out (which he assured me could be done) he kept me entertained …
And if he had any inkling of the real reason my jaw hurt, this might have been the conversation…
Doctor: you know, its good to learn early in your marriage to treat your wife with care.
Me: Agree Doctor, but why…
Doctor: The junction at the beginning of the jawbone is very sensitive….
until next time, dont drop your jaws…

  1. OMG…did the doc actually say that?

Yeah i remember the “Carry On” series. i loved em. especially “the carry on doctor” series. was initially shocked at the british sense of humour but got used to it over a while. I loved the one in which the husband of a pregnant man in admitted in hospital with labour pains…hilarious stuff really.

and hey, you should see a good dentist if it is a wisdom tooth problem!

  2. Thats exactly where my jaw broke. Btw, it is possible to sneeze with your mouth closed. But it will hurt your upper palate, burn your throat and nostrils if you do it too often.

Btw, Papa Hyde swears by an oil he got from Palakkad. Any kind of ache and this magic oil sets to work. Last time I heard him say he is going to try it for indigestion… I have a bottle of that oil at home if you are interested.

  3. i had an ear infection in India…my jaw ached too….kept having to put 4 drops of an antibiotic eardrop…..called.. EXOTIC… i have NO clue why it was named that way…but it worked..well it was antibiotic….anyways…your post just reminded me of that….lol.

  4. was at the emergency yesterday with my 5 yr old- same problem- infection of the right ear- blood and pus too. 2 doses of augmentin and he is playing outside today! certanly time for an antibiotic.

  5. a doctor once said to me while I was visiting him for some cough symptoms “I don’t understand why the medicine is not working!”. Then he gave me a two-week dose of a stronger medicine and a cough inhibitor, which basically supresses the cough but doesn’t cure it. So for the next two weeks or so I had a cough and thanks to the inhibitor I didn’t even know it.

  6. aqua: np he didnt.. thats because he didnt know what caused it in the first place … (the last lines) 😉

TRJ: matter over mind when it pains..

  7. hyde: we should get it analysed.. we could be sitting on the next pharma goldmine 😉

grafxgurl: maybe it has side effects ..lol

  8. satchit: reminds me of the ‘big shit, no chief, joke 🙂

ekta: it was the jaw, but yup, its way better now…

to all: D would be extremely happy that no one paid a lot of importance to the last few lines where the reason for the pain has been hinted at 😉

  9. J: now thats really interesting. its something even i havent been able to get hold of… WHAT is a typical manuscrypts post? i have always thought that it is a variable- general masala stuff… there was a time for stories, a time for philosophy/religion.. so is there something typical?
