Gangadwara

It is the place at which Ganga touches the Indus plains after falling from the Himalayas. It is also known as Haridwar.

It was here that the king Pratipa meditated as per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 97 verse 1. The sage Bharadwaja lived here as per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 129 verse 33. Arjuna visited Haridwar during his pilgrimage as per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 213. It is believed to be a gateway to swargaloka. Bathing here is equivalent to conducting a Paundarikayajna as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 34 verse 27. Agastya, with his wife Lopamudra, meditated here as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 97 verse 11. It was here that Jayadratha meditated and pleased Shiva as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 272 verse 24. Daksha once meditated in Kanakhala in Haridwar as per Mahabharata Shalyaparva Chapter 38 verse 27. Bathing in Kushavarta, Vilwaka, Nilaparva, Kanakhala in Haridwar earns a person entry to swargaloka as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 25 verse 13. Bhishma performed the last rites for Shantanu here as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 34 verse 11. It was near a forest here that Kunti, Dhritarashtra and Gandhari died in a fire. Yudhishtira conducted their last rites here as per Mahabharata Ashramavasikaparva Chapter 39 verse 14.
