Godavari

A famous river in southern India.

She is a member of Varuna’s court as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 9 verse 20. It originates from Brahmagiri, near Trayambakajyotirlinga in Nasik. It runs deep and several sages live serving it as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 88 verse 2. Bathing here earns one the equivalent of a gomedha yajna. He will also attain entry into Vasuki’s world as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 85 verse 33. Agni originates in this river as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 222 verse 24. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita lived in Panchavati on the banks of the Godavari during their exile as per Ramayana Aranyakanda sarga 16. It is one of India’s important rivers as per Mahabharata Bhishmaparva Chapter 9 verse 14. Bathing here earns one Rajalakshmi as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 25 verse 29.

Godana

In ancient India, donating cows was considered a noble deed. Buying cows with hereditary wealth and then donating them would earn a person salvation. Even donating cows bought from gambling money would earn a person a long prosperous life as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 73.

Gothra

A son of Vasishta. Vasishta and Urja had seven sons – Rajas, Hotra, Urdhvabahu, Savana, Anagha, Sutapas, Shukra. They were the saptarishis in the third manvantara as per Vishnupurana Chapter 1.

Gothama

The Rigveda extensively mentions Gothama as the son of Rahugana. Mandala 1 Anuvaka 13 Sukta 74 as well many others was made by this sage. He is not to be confused with Ahalya’s husband, who composed Mandala 1 Anuvaka 11 Sukta 58. Gothama was once very thirsty and asked the Maruttas for water. They uprooted an entire well and brought it to him, and also poured water into a large vessel for him as per Mandala 1 Anuvaka 14 Suktas 86,87. But as per Mandala 1 Anuvaka 17 Sukta 116, this was done by the Ashwinis.

Gokhali

A sage in vyasa’s disciple dynasty. Gokhali was a disciple of Shakalya, who divided his veda branch among his six disciples –  Valgayana, Maulgalya, Adishishira, Yatukarna, Shali and Gokhali as per Bhagavata Sarga 12.

Gokarna (3)

During the Mahabharata war, Karna sent a nagastra at Arjuna. Ashwasena was the snake in the weapon. His mother’s name was Gokarna as per Mahabharata Karnaparva Chapter 90 verse 42.

Gokarna (2)

An incarnation of Shiva. In the seventh varahakalpa Shiva was born as Gokarna and he had four sons – Kashyapa, Ushanas, Chyavana, Brihaspati as per Shivapurana Shatarudrasamhita.
