Also known as Kaushiki. A famous river who is also worshiped as a goddess. As per Kambaramayana, Kaushiki was Vishwamitra’s sister and became a river because of a curse. Kaushiki was married to the sage Richika. Once Richika went to devaloka to visit Brahma and since Kaushiki didn’t want to be separated from him, she followed him. But Richika didn’t like this and cursed her to become a river as per Ramayana Balakanda.

She lives in Varuna’s court worshiping him as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 9 verse 23. Yudhishtira visited here as part of his pilgrimage as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 95 verse 2. Gomati was the wife of Vishwabhuk, an agni, as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 219 verse 19. It is one of India’s main rivers as per Mahabharata Bhishmaparva Chapter 9 verse 18. The empire of Ayodhya’s king Divodasa extended from Ganga in the north to Gomati in the south as per Brahmandapurana Chapter 2.
