Unmada

An apsara.

The gandharva king Hamsa had a commander named Durmada. Durmada once lusted after Urvashi. That was when Urvashi was living with Pururavas as his wife. Urvashi repeatedly ignored Durmada’s pleas. Once Urvashi and Pururavas were at the court of Indra and planned a rendezvous in Indra’s garden – Nandavana. Durmada heard of this and hatched a plot along with Unmada. Durmada and Unmada took the forms of Pururavas and Urvashi respectively.  The original Pururavas and Urvashi mistook Unmada and Durmada to be originals and mated with them. Durmada gave the plot away by laughing loudly. Pururavas and Unmada too reached there. Urvashi cursed that Durmada would be born a rakshasa and Unmada a human princess, who would love one person and end up marrying another. They begged for forgiveness and Urvashi said that Durmada would be born as Unmada’s son. Unmada would watch her husband and son die and jump into a pyre herself and would thus attain moksha. As per Brhamandapurana Chapter 3, Durmada was born as Pingaksha, son of Dirkhajankha, who was the king of Hiranyapura and Unmada was born as Harini, daughter of the king of Videha.

Pingaksha was enamoured of Harini and carried her away through the sky. When Harini began wailing, Pingaksha left her in a forest. A king called Vasumanas reached there and in the battle that followed, he killed Pingaksha. Vasumanas heard all that had happened from Harini and sent her on a horse named Jimuta to Videha. Her father was very happy and wanted to marry her to Vasumanas. Several kings were invited for the wedding. But a king named Bradrashrenya took Harini away by force. Though Vasumanas battled Bhadrashrenya, he lost . Another king named Divodasa then defeated Bhadrashrenya but left him alive. Bhadrashrenya took Harini to his palace and married her. A son was born to them and was named Durmada. (an incarnation of Pingaksha) He grew up and forcibly took his uncle’s daughter Chitrangi, and she had a child. Meanwhile Bhadrashrenya once again fought Divodasa and lost. Durmada tried to help his father but failed. Vasumanas tried to use this opportunity but lost to Bhadrashrenya. However both Bhadrashrenya and Durmada died in battle. Harini was saddened by this and jumped into a pyre as per Brahmandapurana Chapter 3.
